There are a lot of stories and beliefs about rainbows that come from ancient times. The ancient Greeks said that the rainbow traveled with the messenger of the Gods. The messenger is named Iris. She flies on the rainbow and then she lifts the water from the rivers and oceans of the earth into the sky and it falls back to earth as rain. The Vikings believed that the rainbow connected heaven and earth. The Navajo says that the twin hero sons of the sun traveled into their father’s land by walking onto the rainbow. In Siberia the rainbow is the storm God's bow and is used to shoot arrows of lighting. In Australia the rainbow is the great serpent of dreams. In the Bible the rainbow signals the end of rain and is God's promise that the world will never be flooded again. The About Time crew believes that it symbolizes Franklin Avenue's great success. Go community!

Social Media for Kids® Coming to Lily & Fig This November!

Social Media for Kids® was organized and put into effect by proud residents of the Crown Heights community. In an effort to enrich the community dear to our hearts, for five weeks every Wednesday Social Media for Kids® will offer a free after school program, teaching students how to present themselves in the public eye through the web, discussing privacy issues, combating "cyber-bullying" and using social media for personal advancements. This program will commence on November 10th, 2010 after school hours from 4-6pm at the Lily & Fig Bakery located on 727 Franklin Ave.

Now as the rides are disassembled and the last of the stickers are given away, the feeling of togetherness is stronger than ever; everyone is pulling together even in the clean-up effort. Fire fighters have just arrived on the scene to open up a hydrant-establishing a make shift sprinkler. As the last of the delectable blueberry tart was sold, a sense of excitement and relief filled the air: the funds needed to achieve a successful Kids Day were finally gathered. With 16 days left until the highly anticipated event, the buzz surrounding the upcoming 3^rd Annual Kids Day is becoming almost deafening. Residents from all over Crow Hill stopped by the AboutTime Boutique to show support for the event, as well as the community through their purchases. In reflection of the 3^rd Annual Kids Day, the bake sale had a sweet treat for everyone in the family-specifically the perfectly decorated cupcakes with delicate edible flowers, and the best selling Patron Cupcakes (exclusively for the adult crowd). The commitment of those involved and the support that ensured the success of all the bake sales, has quantified the feeling of unity and family among the tight-knit Crown Heights community.

Yesterday, AboutTime Boutique welcomed their summer youth interns. Welcomed by extremely friendly and wonderful people, the summer youth interns began their jobs with the prospects of maturing, learning to handle responsibility, and remaining focused. The AboutTime Boutique is currently preparing for the 3rd Annual Kids Day in association with the community board of Crown Heights. The main purpose of the event is to bring the community together. This event will be held on Saturday, July 24 2010 and will have plenty of activities for kids and adults alike. Some activities include face painting, carnival rides, a dunk tank and much more. Last year’s Annual Kids Day was amazing, the community came together and lots of donations were made. This year you wont want to leave.

CHCA Community Garden

The CHCA Community Garden is making quite some progress. The abandoned lot, once filled with what seemed like fields of weeds and rubbish, is on its way to becoming an accessible beautiful community garden, where people from all over the community can benefit; whether it be to find relief from the hot summer sun with the shade provided by the towering trees or to enjoy a Barbeque with family and friends. Since members of the community started the project on May 16, 2010 the lot has been completely cleared of all garbage, and replaced with a variety of over 30 plants, which are being watered daily to make sure that they prosper in the horrible heat wave that has taken over our Brooklyn.

The Weeksville Garden Party: A Food & Music Festival in Brooklyn, brings some of the best up and coming musicians, and various renowned food vendors to one of the most unique venues in Brooklyn for knowledge on producing a non-profit music, film and food series in NYC through this behind the scenes view. The Weeksville Garden Party has been named "The Best Outdoor Bash" by the Daily News.

Volunteers are needed for everything from set-up to guest check in for a minimum 5 hour commitment.

Five years ago, Jarrett Mathis, a young man growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y.,finally became fed up. Too often he heard black youth refer to themselves using demeaning terms like nigga (even as a term of endearment), bitch, faggot, and hoe — language often condoned by popular music. And the prevalence of the disparaging language appeared to coincide with a decline in the number of classes devoted to black history in the public school curriculum.

This upsetting trend led Mathis to craft an interactive workshop that has helped to empower black youth and reduce violence in inner cities across the country. Over the past four years, Mathis has traveled throughout New York, Florida, California, New Hampshire, and Philadelphia to present his"Empowering Ourselves" workshop.

"Boys and girls become more interested in finding ways to not only further empower themselves, but also their peers,” Mathis says. “This has sparked a greater interest in finishing high school and going to college, not to mention that it has made the schools and communities I've worked in safer.”

Mathis has now transformed his workshop into a documentary, “Empowering Ourselves,” free online for use by students and teachers. The 75-minute documentary is available on Mathis’ website, EmpoweringOurselvesNow.com.

If preliminary reactions are any indication, this film is sure to have the impact Mathis wants. “This is an important film that I wish every child in our community could watch," according to Tameka Landers, a first grade public school teacher in Brooklyn.

Elizabeth O'Neil, also a sixth grade public school teacher, in Brooklyn,echoed those sentiments, saying, "The documentary blew me away. It contains so much information that is left out of textbooks."

”Empowering Ourselves,” available online now, will officially launch on Friday July 9. To celebrate the event, there will be a party that same day at the Bedford Brooklyn Public Library, 496 Franklin Avenue, Brooklyn,N.Y 11238, from 3:30pm-5:30 p.m. There will be free pizza, drinks, and ice cream. A signed NBA jersey will be raffled off to one lucky person. All are welcomed.

Mod Melange Art Exhibit

Launch Pad has a special invitation for art lovers who reside in the Crown Heights area.

LaunchPad is now happy to present the Mod Melange travelling art show for a two week exhibit, beginning this Saturday. Curiosities include projected film installations, three-dimensional things in boxes, outdoor murals, sumptuous paintings, and jams by DJ Carrie Whitenoise.

Waterproof Street Mannequins in the Fashion District !

A unique art ensemble promoting the Fashion Exhibit was unveiled today in the Garment District of Manhattan. The exhibit consists of 32 mannequins with chic, waterproof designs. Carlos Falchi, known for his famous handbags is amongst the pool of designers involved.

Two Parsons students also got to be a part of the astonishing project, by winning a contest. Anyone wishing to view the exhibit should venture over to Broadway between Times Square & Herald Square, it'll be there through Labor Day.

Makeup by Kim

Kim Porter is an artist and her canvas is the face. She is a native of Brooklyn, New York, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health from Hofstra University. Albeit her quest for a tertiary education was fulfilled, her passion has just begun to seriously take a running leap into the direction of success. Porter has a serious addiction to makeup, and immensely enjoys to help herself and others feel beautiful inside and out. Luckily for her, she had an eye for colors and makeup since her childhood. Her gift of makeup artistry is self-taught. As a child, Kim loved to play with her mother's makeup and in high school she would always peruse the makeup counters and purchase a few items. Porter always took time out everyday to perfect her craft by teaching herself how to apply the makeup, watching youtube instructional videos, and using her willing friends as models to see what worked and what did not. As a woman of color, and a consumer, she knows first hand how difficult it is to locate the right cosmetics and artist; without searching high and low and spending an obnoxious amount of money on finding the right shade. As a freelance artist, she understands the puzzlement and lack of education women of color have, in terms of the correct application of makeup. There is a science to the art of correctly applying makeup and putting one's best face forward that, Kim has first hand knowledge of. Porter has launched a Blog and a Youtube instructional channel, through these she hopes to reach a wider audience and provide the African-American community with a virtual hands-on guide to putting their best face forward. The most important element of Kim's work is to be able to use her creativity to enhance natural beauty, yet bring out a person's inner beauty and individuality.

(May 26, 2010) The environmentally conscious owner of About Time Boutique, Kevin Phillips, has finally decided to join the Green movement. Phillips prides himself on keeping abreast of current events and being a conscious member of his community having participated in countless charity events to benefit his community; so it was imminent that he would eventually take his company green. The recent oil spill in the Gulf persuaded him to speed up the process of producing his t-shirts in an organic manner. He has decided to forgo the use of PVC based ink and will begin using water based ink; which is eco-friendly and keeps the t-shirt design aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Not only is he doing the environment a service, he is also on the cutting edge of the Green movement in his area of Brooklyn, NY. There are not many stores in the area, which have decided to be on the cusp of this new Green movement. The benefits of using water based ink are plentiful and uncomplicated to obtain. When using water based ink, there are no toxic fumes being released into the atmosphere, which was a great concern for Phillips because his immediate atmosphere is his workspace. Also, the screens can be easily cleaned with water and can safely go down the drain because they are no more harmful that your normal household cleaners. While these two facts are extremely important, the selling point for Phillips was that the use of water based ink will not diminish the quality of his t-shirts. The colors of water based ink are more vibrant, the ink itself is extremely durable, and lightweight which will provide optimum comfort to the wearer.

The Crow Hill Association 25th Anniversary

This Saturday and Sunday will begin the creation of a new mural on Eastern Parkway and Franklin Avenue to be completed by September. The vision was motivated by the excellent work efforts exemplified by the CHCA over the past 25 years. Instead of using the whole space each artist will be given the chance to generate an individual vision on a 4’x8’ panel. The final touches will be laid on later in the summer but feel free to come out this weekend.

Paint, brushes, and rollers will be provided but drop cloths, and ladders are greatly needed.

The History of Crow Hill

On Wednesday June 9^th five students from Paul Robeson High School will be participating in an oral history project about Crown Heights. With the help of testimonials of more than 45 individuals living in the Crown Heights area for more than 15 years the students have constructed a project that will broaden everyone’s knowledge of Crown Heights. Kevin Phillip (the owner of About Time Boutique) has also been interviewed for a contributing story in the oral presentation.

This presentation is made possible by the Crow Hill Community association, co-sponsored by the Grassroots Media Coalition and Super Wings NY. The event will take place at Launch Pad at 7pm.

Tree Attacker in Crown Heights

A mysterious man in the neighborhood has been attacking trees, every year around the same time. This past Saturday he started on the trees. Apparently he spends time on Franklin Ave. daily, and the cops have been called several times. The police have even contributed this past week to the clearing of the trees on the block.

The man in question is 5’10 with a beard and two braids going down the back of his head. He shamelessly attacks trees in broad day light so several people of the neighborhood have seen him doing this.

Whatever happened to values and being free to choose whatever or whomever you want? I consider myself a fashionista, even though it might sound too confident of myself but my life does in fact revolve around fashion. I was in an interracial relationship for 7 months. He was my first true love! Not just my partner but someone I call best friend. A caring, loving intelligent pre law student who truly wished the best for me. Sad to say I had to let him go because my parents would never accept him. My Father and Mother would absolutely disown me as their child, as they've warned several times, if i continue to see him. No matter how much I love my ex there's no going against my family. Don’t get me wrong, my family is far from being racist, I mean they don't mind my African American, White American, Spanish or Asian female friends. From my understanding it's a cultural conflict. Who cares get over it. His family was no walk through the park... they never accepted me. This is when I realized it can't work... my true match. I can't believe they never wanted to meet him because he was African American. I come from a family that is part Armenian and part Turkish. Turkey and Armenia were known for being true enemies causing a genocide in 1915. So I always come to this question: if they made it and fell in love why can’t I? It’s just like when you buy a white bag... the shoes don't necessarily have to match. They can be black, red or purple pumps. This is what I love about fashion you can mix and match anything... so long as it blends right! Why can’t relationships between different races be as simple as matching an outfit?.. just let the darn thing blend & watch the beauty spring into fashion:) Shout out to these famous interracial couples To conclude...
